Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Villars-sur-Ollon, Elizabeth returned to settle once more in 2023 in the village where she grew up. After earning a doctorate in art history from the University of Cambridge, she worked in Baltimore, Maryland, as a museum curator and taught ancient and medieval art history. She then turned to studio art, earning a Certificate of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is a Signature Artist member of the Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania Watercolor Societies, has exhibited in numerous venues in the mid-Atlantic states and online, and has received many awards for her work.

Elizabeth’s artistic inspiration derives from her travels and above all from nature’s infinite variety of forms. Starting from precise observation, she endeavors to give voice to these unique shapes. In her abstract work, she distills natural forms while still preferring organic-looking curves. She has been sensitive to the expressive power of color since childhood and often revisits a subject to enhance a coloristic effect. She particularly favors the fluid and luminous medium of watercolor: layers of transparent pigment provide the brilliance and the variety of tone that she values.

Née à Washington et élevée à Villars-sur-Ollon, Elizabeth s’est à nouveau établie en 2023 dans le village de son enfance. Après avoir complété un doctorat en histoire de l’art à l’Université de Cambridge, elle travailla comme conservateur de musée à Baltimore, dans le Maryland, et enseigna l’histoire de l’art ancien et médiéval. Puis elle entama sa carrière artistique avec un certificat des beaux-arts au Maryland Institute College of Art. Elle est membre signataire des associations d’aquarellistes de Baltimore, de Philadelphie, et de la Pennsylvanie, et ses oeuvres, exposées dans divers lieux aux Etats-Unis et sur internet, ont gagné de nombreux prix.

Elizabeth Burin tire son inspiration artistique de ses voyages et surtout des formes infiniment variées de la nature. A partir d’une observation précise, elle cherche à donner voix à ces structures uniques. Dans ses œuvres abstraites, elle simplifie les formes naturelles tout en privilégiant les courbes d’aspect organique. Sensible au pouvoir expressif de la couleur depuis son enfance, elle répète souvent un sujet afin de rehausser un effet coloré. Elle favorise tout particulièrement le medium fluide et lumineux de l’aquarelle, car les pigments transparents appliqués en couches créent l’éclat et la variété de ton qu’elle recherche.
